About Yakutia

The Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is 3.1 million km² occupying one-fifth of the whole Russian Federation territory. Its wide area lies within three time-zones. The country stretches for 2000 km from North to South and 2500 km from West to East. Incidentally, Yakutia takes 10% of the world natural scenic area.

The natives take pride in the main rivers running throughout their Republic – the beautiful Lena, Anabar, Olenek, Yana, Indigirka, Kolyma, all teemed with delicious northern fish.
But the Republic, fondly called by the residents the Olonho Land, the biggest Russian region, has severe environmental conditions. Its sharp continental climate is characterized by a range of temperatures up to 100°, from +40° in summer to –60° in winter. The temperature on the polar region near Oimyakon falls to –70° during winter. According to Russian 2010 census figures, the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) has a population of 949.3 thousand inhabitants with a density of 0.3 per km². The Republic possesses many lucrative natural resources. But its main treasure lies within the harsh almost untouched virgin northern habitat. The preferentially protected natural area in Yakutia makes 883 258 km², or 28.4% of territory of the Sakha Republic.
The Republic unique “Orto Doidu” zoo is the only one in the whole world organized in such extremely cold climate conditions. Since its founding the exposition has expanded from 12 kinds to 146 world faunal representatives, including large predatory mammals. Yakutia is not only the largest North land, but the agricultural industry volume leader. The Republic has a one third share in cattle population of the Far North regions and the most considerable number of Yakut breed horses. In deer population Yakutia closely follows to the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District.

The permanently frozen ground produces heavy crops of grains, potatoes and vegetables.
Russia's largest well-established companies such as “ALROSA”, “Gazprom”, “Surgutneftegas”, “Mechel” operate in the Republic. The “Rosatom”, “Rushydro” and other companies are seriously commited to their own projects development to compete in the Republic business arena.
Yakutia is famous for its diamonds, coal and oil and is soon to offer more of its bounty of Yakut natural resources to the world.
