Yakutsk to gather mayors for the international conference

On June 27-28 Yakutsk is hosting the International Conference “Cities and People: Civic Initiatives – the Formula of Mutual Trust”

Ilsur Metshin, Mayor of Kazan, UCLG Co-President, is expected to come; there are negotiations on participation of Kadir Topbas, Mayor of Istanbul, President of UCLG, and other guests.

The Conference organizers have invited over 600 potential participants. The United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) global network members, the International Assembly of Capital and Major Cities, the Union of Arctic and Far North Cities have confirmed their arrival. There are negotiations going on interested foreign cities delegations coming, as well

The capital city of Yakutsk is developing rapidly, with its population having increased since 1950 from 59.9 thousand to 350 thousand people in 2014. The time has come to solve the Yakutsk development issues on the international level: Yakutsk is to adopt experience of other cities, which requires face-to-face communication for exchange of practices, innovations, and ideas.

Thus, the conference provides an opportunity to review the city problems on the global scale, to discuss them with representatives of the cities from all over the world, to exchange best practices of solving specific problems. In its turn, Yakutsk has unprecendented experience of developing a large city on permafrost. The conference will result in opening new opportunities for the city development, with civic initiatives playing more important role.
