Final stage of “The Arctic - Territory of Discoveries”

On July 28, 2013 Tiksi village started the final and most important stage of the project “The Arctic - Territory of Discoveries” which is an expedition of 4000 km along the Northern Sea Route by Pomorsky koches (replicas of ancient sailing ships). At the end of the stage the expedition will cross the Bering Strait and come in Anadyr by September, where they will take part in celebrations dedicated to the 365 anniversary of Semyon Dezhnev’s discovery of the strait between Asia and America.

The expedition is unique because no one after Semyon Dezhnev could pass this route on such historical ships with square sails during one shipping season in the form of a coastal trade.

The main objectives of the research program are a search for traces of the Pomorsky culture in mouths of the rivers Yana, Indigirka, Kolyma; a visit to the village Russkoe Ustie on the Indigirka River, Chukchi and Eskimo coastal settlements; recording of condition of the cultural and natural heritage; description of the coastline.

Besides the researches, they will continue work on development of routes for the Arctic tourism. Most of the developments of the expeditions of 2011-2012 are effectively used in the tourism industry.

There are 9 people in the expedition representing the whole Russia - Moscow, Petrozavodsk, Arkhangelsk, Cherepovets, and Anadyr.
